The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit is being held in Islamabad on October 15–16, 2024, and Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is now in Pakistan to represent his country. It is noteworthy that an Indian foreign minister is visiting Pakistan for the first time in almost ten years. The travel is solely for the organization’s meetings and not for any bilateral talks with Pakistan, Jaishankar emphasized. The trip is centered on multilateral diplomacy within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
India, Pakistan, China, Russia, and a number of Central Asian countries are members of the SCO, a significant regional alliance. Leaders are expected to concentrate on regional cooperation in areas including socio-cultural development, economics, and security during the summit. As part of its SCO chairmanship rotation, Pakistan is hosting the event.
Both Pakistan and India have made it plain that formal bilateral talks are not scheduled, notwithstanding the historic significance of Jaishankar’s visit. Though the attendance of officials from India and Pakistan has drawn a lot of attention because of the long-standing tensions between the two countries, the multilateral agenda is still the main focus.
